18th August 2007 - Len Webb Group Match 4

Sheppey FC 2 - 2 Maltby Catholic Club

An understrength Sheppey side dropped their first points of the Len Webb in a hard fought contest against the side level on points with them at the top of the group. Kicking up the slope in the first half, Sheppey carved out the first opening in the fifth minute. Craig Walker, making his first starting appearance in nearly a year, played Alexander in down the left but no-one was on hand to finish his low cross. Two minutes later a three man Catholic Club move saw Hayes fire over when well placed. On 22 minutes Sheppey again went close, Dunhill's corner from the right was headed back across goal by Popplewell only for Staniforth to slice his shot into the arms of the keeper. Five minutes later Reynolds fed Staniforth down the right but the keeper gathered his low shot at the second attempt. Sheppey continued to create chances, Dunhill's left foot shot going wide before a looping effort from Walker shaved the top of the bar. The deadlock was finally broken on 37 minutes, a long ball forward from Chris Beech caused confusion in the Catholic Club defence and Staniforth was on hand to roll the ball into an unguarded net from 12 yards. Four minutes later Staniforth's corner from the right was flicked on by Spence for Popplewell to rifle home a low angled drive into the bottom right hand corner. HT 2-0

Sheppey started the second half slowly and were made to pay on 50 minutes, Paul Bielby lifting the ball over the
onrushing Wright and into the far corner, although there was more than a hint of offside. On 51 minutes the injured Paul Bradley was replaced by Phil Veal at centre half. Catholic Club continued to take the game to Sheppey and on the hour the pressure yielded an equaliser. As Walker tried to clear a low cross into the box, the ball bobbled up sharply and struck him on the arm and the referee, deeming it delibrate, gave the penalty. Hayes stepped up confidently and drove his shot into the bottom corner. Catholic Club continued to press the patched up Sheppey defence, forcing several corners but without creating any clear cut chances. At the other end chances were also at a premium, Staniforth shooting wide from distance before Spence drove a freekick wildly high and wide.

Team: Matt Wright, Chris Beech, Craig Harrison, Matt Dunhill, Lewis Spence, Paul Bradley (Phil Veal 51), Craig Walker, Mike Reynolds, Chris Staniforth, Richard Popplewell, Ashley Alexander
