26th August 2007 - Len Webb Semi Final

Sheppey FC 1 - 4 Maltby Miners Welfare B

Sheppey lost in the semi finals of the Len Webb for the second successive season as they were out fought by a hard working Maltby Miners Welfare B. With several players missing due to injury and holiday Sheppey were forced into 4 changes with Simon Denton, Paul Bradley, Chris Beech and Craig Harrison coming in for Matt Wright, Lewis Spence, Phil Veal and Russ Ainsworth. Kicking up the slope Sheppey were slow to get to grips with the pace of the game and their opponents had several half chances in the opening quarter of an hour. The pressure finally told on 17 minutes when Sinclair was able to control a long ball before firing into the bottom right hand corner. Sheppey continued to struggle to create openings against a resolute defence, Popplewell's shot from the edge of the box that was deflected wide the only chance of any note in the first half. Five minutes before half time Chris Beech, still suffering from illness, was replaced by Craig Walker on the right of midfield. HT 0-1

t the start of the second half Paul Bradley was replaced at centre half by Richard Beecher. As the half wore on Sheppey began to assert some pressure on the Miners' back line but were still struggling to create clear cut chances and were limited to shots from distance, Staniforth, Dunhill and Popplewell sending shots wide of the mark. With 65 minutes played the Miners took a 2-0 lead, a long ball down the right caused confusion in the Sheppey defence, allowing Hancock to stab the ball passed the onrushing Denton from 6 yards. Sheppey were handed a lifeline in the 80th minute when Walker was needlessly upended in the box, Staniforth tucking away the resultant penalty low to the keeper's left. Hopes of a fightback were all but extinguished four minutes later when
Hancock's attempted cross looped over Denton into the top corner. As Sheppey pushed forward in vain they inevitably left gaps at the back which allowed Hancock to complete his hattrick with style, smashing the ball in off the underside of the bar from 18 yards.

Team: Simon Denton, Paul Wright, Craig Harrison, Matt Dunhill, Paul Bradley (Richard Beecher 45), Jon Taylor, Chris Beech (Craig Walker 40), Mike Reynolds, Chris Staniforth, Richard Popplewell, Ashley Alexander
