18th November 2007 - Division 2

Maltby Miners Welfare 1-4 Sheppey FC

Sheppey made two changes to the side that narrowly beat Whiston the previous week. Tom Chipchase was unavailable so his place in attack was taken by returning skipper Chris Staniforth. More worryingly, goalkeeper Matt Wright was involved in a serious road accident the previous day and he now faces a long lay-off with a badly damaged knee. His place in goal was taken by centre half Lewis Spence.

The start of the game was typical of a local Maltby derby, all blood and thunder with little chance to get the ball down and play in the opening quarter. Sheppey created the first real chance of the match when Staniforth headed Dunhill's freekick just wide of the far post. Moments later the Miners had the ball in the back of the net but the referee deemed Spence had full control of the ball before it was kicked from his grasp. Sheppey took the lead on 19 minutes courtesy of some poor goalkeeping and Chris Staniforth's alertness. As the ball bounced harmlessly towards the penalty box, the Miners keeper attempted to allow the ball to roll into his area so he could pick it up. Staniforth had other ideas and poked the ball between the sprawling keeper's legs and rolled it into the empty net. 10 minutes later it was two, Reynolds crossing from the left for Dunhill to flick home with the outside of his right boot from 8 yards. Just before half time Paul Bradley suffered a back injury and had to be replaced by Ainsworth.
HT 2-0
Five minutes into the second half Sheppey made all but certain of the three points when Staniforth easily beat his man on the right and crossed for Reynolds to volley against the post before slotting the rebound into the bottom left corner. With twenty minutes remaining Craig Walker was replaced by Chris Mills on the left of midfield and, five minutes later, it was the substitutes corner from the left that led to Sheppey's fourth goal. Dunhill flicked the ball on at the near post and although Chris Beech saw his shot blocked on the line, Jon Taylor followed up to score his first ever Sheppey goal from 15 yards. Moments later the luckless Beech saw his powerful strike hit both bar and post before bouncing to safety. Spence then made a spectacular save, diving full length to his left to push away a goal bound header. Ten minutes from time tempers boiled over and the Miners were reduced to nine men. An innocuous looking challenge from Mills was the catalyst, the Miners centre half subsequently slapping him across the face. In the aftermath both he and the Miners skipper were sent off, the latter for an alleged push on the referee. Mills was also harshly booked for the original challenge. Five minutes from time the hosts grabbed a consolation goal, Cookson hitting a speculative shot from the edge of the box that took a wicked bounce to deceive Spence and nestle in the corner.

Team: Lewis Spence, Paul Wright, Richard Beecher, Matt Dunhill, Paul Bradley (Russ Ainsworth 35), Jon Taylor, Chris Morris, Mike Reynolds, Chris Staniforth, Craig Walker (Chris Mills 70), Chris Beech
